In the jewelery store, looking at shit you can't buy
Paul Dunbar can be represented by many actors, comedian, politician and even rappers
because these characters share a little bit of what he was, there is not other Dunbar. He was unique due to what he was and
the specific time period he lived. He cannot be copy because the time period is different from when he was alive. Ignoring
all these facts, He can be identify or more or less he is alike some modern characters. Lets take a close look at him by comparing
Paul and a modern rapper 50 Cents. 50 Cents is famous because of his colloquial language. Paul Laurence was acknowledging
by his colorful language and the use of dialect.
In the other hand, 50 cents is famous because of
his songs, too. His songs speak, as Dunbar’s poems, about injustice and inequality. Most of the time he sings about
poverty, life conditions and aspirations. For example in “Window Shopper,” he sings “The top feels so much
better that the bottom/ So much better/ Ja you’s a window shopper/ Mad at me, I think I know why/ Jada you’s a window shopper/ In the jewery store, looking at shit you can’t buy/ Joe you’s
a window shopper/ In the dealership, trying to get a test drive/ Nas you’s
awindow shopper/ Mad as Fuck when you see me ride by/. Most of 50 cents songs are related with Paul Dunbar work. Not only
that, both characters share the same background, they are black African American. Even though time has change, they express
the same feelings of their people but in words. While Dunbar is polite, 50 Cents is blunt and shameless when it comes to word
usage. |
